How to Travel from Halong to Cat Ba: A Comprehensive Guide

Many travelers enjoy cruises in either Halong Bay or Lan Ha Bay, but if you’re looking to explore both Halong and Cat Ba Island, here's how to make the journey smoothly.

Ferry Option: A Relaxing Journey from Tuan Chau

For a leisurely travel experience, consider taking a ferry from Tuan Chau port to Cat Ba Island. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Get to Tuan Chau Port: If you’re staying in Halong City, a taxi is the easiest way to reach Tuan Chau port. For guests at the SunWorld amusement park, the port is about 12 km away, and a taxi ride will cost around 150,000 VND (about $6.50).

Catch the Ferry: At Tuan Chau port, board the ferry heading to Gia Luan port on Cat Ba Island. This ferry route connects you to the northern part of Cat Ba Island. The ticket costs 60,000 VND (approximately $2.50).

This scenic ferry ride offers a relaxing way to reach Cat Ba Island and is a great option for those who have a bit of extra time to enjoy the journey.

Round-Trip Ferry Schedules

High Season (April 30 – September 30)

  • Tuan Chau to Gia Luan: 7:30 AM, 9:00 AM, 11:30 AM, 1:30 PM, 3:00 PM
  • Gia Luan to Tuan Chau: 9:00 AM, 11:30 AM, 1:00 PM, 3:00 PM, 4:00 PM

Slow Season (October 1 – April 29)

  • Tuan Chau to Gia Luan: 7:30 AM, 11:30 AM, 3:00 PM
  • Gia Luan to Tuan Chau: 9:00 AM, 1:00 PM, 4:00 PM

To reach Cat Ba town, located in the southern part of the island, take a local bus from Gia Luan. The bus ride takes about 30 minutes and costs 20,000 VND (approximately $0.90).

The total cost for the ferry journey will be around $5 per person.

Fast Option: Speedboat from Tuan Chau

If you're short on time, consider taking a speedboat from Tuan Chau to Gia Luan port. This option is much quicker, getting you to your destination in just a few minutes.

The speedboat is a faster alternative, reaching Gia Luan port in just a few minutes. However, it is more expensive, with tickets costing 150,000 VND (about $6.50) per person.

Speedboat Schedule:

  • Tuan Chau to Gia Luan: 7:15 AM, 8:30 AM, 10:30 AM, 1:00 PM, 2:30 PM, 4:00 PM

After arriving at Gia Luan port, you can take a bus or taxi to Cat Ba town in the southern part of the island. This is similar to the ferry option.
